We are well into our final week together. My boys will meet their new packs on Friday/Saturday and will start the journey to their new homes on Saturday/Sunday. (We'll post pictures of their new pack leadership on Sunday).

I will miss them, but know it will be the right time. Pack Leader will need lots of help with his approaching separation anxiety --- Silken, Faolin, Maggie and I will take shifts looking after him.

I have gradually been reducing access to the milk bar but still enjoy getting together with my boys so that they can have a little slurp just before bedtime. Latest weights has everyone around 10 pounds.

They are a solid and tightly connected group. When we get up in the morning and everyone is out of their crates the boys check in with each other, and before the wrestling starts anew they always have little kisses for each other.

My boys made it to the back forty at the farm today. But first, I want to show you a little video of them responding to a "that'l do" command. Note that #3 and #1 had a head start --- they were wrestling in the junipers while #2 and #4 were at the bottom of the hill.

Sorry for the camera work. The pups aren't exactly following a script --- they are at the stage of discovering new smells and textures and have short attention spans. So Pack Leader's poor camera work is pushed to the limits by running backwards and trying to capture all the pups.

On Monday we went to Hambly Lake to visit our friends Larry and Sam. The boys enjoyed exploring a number of hollowed out tree stumps.

We also took a trip to Amherst Island yesterday. The waves were a little high so Pack Leader's concentration was on keeping the pups safe --- so sorry we don't have any pictures. All of the pups were a little overwhelmed by the wave action, but watched Silken, Faolin, Maggie and I swim through the surf with interest. After that, and when the boys were a bit tired, Reta helped us get some portrait shots.

Party, party, party. People to see, places to go.

Yesterday we made our longest car trip yet - 1 3/4 hours to Brockville, Ontario to visit my Uncle Donald and Aunt Val, cousins and extended family. Everyone loved my boys, and the boys put on a grand performance. I was one proud Mom.

When we dropped off Gayla in Kingston, we thought the puppies might need a pee break --- and we had a spontaneous block party break out. The boys sure are popular and love people --- and I must confess it isn't so bad getting lots of compliments and pets myself (although the occasional liver treat from these puppy affectionados wouldn't go amiss).

When we got home, everyone was ready for bed --- and last night we had only one little accident (in the second half of the night).

We spent a quiet day in the back yard with the big dogs playing fetch and the pups playing with their favourite toys --- a plastic water bottle and a margarine tub. Keep away is starting, and when they get a hold of the big dogs cloth frisbee, they try hard to build pack relationships. Faolin isn't buying in to that program yet, but it is amazing how well each of them have learned to read what behaviour is acceptable with each member of the pack.

They love Silken, and would love to get Faolin and Maggie's participation in play. Not a chance .... yet.

Tonight, crate training begins (so keep us all in your thoughts and prayers). Don't feel too badly for them --- Pack Leader is a softy and starts with two in a crate and half nights. He apparently doesn't have my ability to ignore needless whimpering.

Tomorrow we are on the road again --- hopefully we'll get a video worth sharing.

Aunt Silken's Day Camp

We've had a busy couple of days.

Made our first car trip on Monday (to Amherst island). Even though I lost my usual front passenger seat riding position to a puppy crate I didn't mind --- Pack Leader was able to keep my boys settled --- only a little bit of squacking at the start of the trip, and when we were on the boat. No upset tummies as well.

While the big dogs and Pack Leader went for a swim, Gayla and Reta looked after the pups. We're going to go back on Thursday and slowly start the introduction to all the farm animals.

The boys are eating and drinking for themselves now but they are still after me for a slurp at the all day milk diner. Fortunately Aunt Silken provided lots of diversion for the pups today which was a great relief.

Even when pinned they continue to wag their tails.

Pouncing, stalking and heading have been dominating outdoor activity. They all could use more work on their stopping skills, but going faster is of much more interest. All of the pups watched Faolin, Silken and I play fetch today, and were beginning to noticeably follow the movement of the frisbee. However, they are equally captivated by wind blown leaves.

Didn't get any good pictures of #4 today, but Joyce (Trim's Pack Leader) sent on a great shot she took on Sunday.

Five Weeks Old

Yesterday, "dear old" Dad came for a visit. Fortunately (for him) he brought liver treats.We tried to get a family shot, but my boys just weren't interested in sitting around for that. So instead, Joyce (Trim's Mom) held each of the pups for a picture.

Joyce took each of the pups out for a little one-on-one, and had the following comments:

All pups were confident, had no reluctance to being held, and quickly followed a new human.
#2 is a little smaller than the other pups, was squirmy, and more active than the other pups. To quote, "he is a lot of dog".
#3 was the only pup to track a piece of liver treat.
#1 and #4 were the calmest.

At any rate, this is a snapshot at five weeks, and we're going to try to get more assessments done of my boys over the next couple of weeks.

Last night was the first night for making a middle of the night (around 2:30 a.m.) bathroom break. Each of the boys went out and did some of their "business".

We've been trying to get an action video for the last few days and this is the best we have come up with. We're heading to the island, and then on to Kingston today, so hopefully we'll get some visuals to share.

Exploring, Playing and Sleeping

Sorry for the long delay in postings. Pack Leader was away for a few days (but we had Gayla and Kirsten looking after us), and we've been spending lots of time outdoors.

We had our first little hiccup. #2 (Trim Jr.) had a swollen right eye-lid which seems to have corrected itself over the last couple of days. Could have resulted from puppy play or an insect bite --- we made a trip to Dr. Michelle to rule out worse possibilities. At any rate he now seems to be just fine, and we'll keep a close watch for the next several days to make sure.

The pups are getting quicker with each day, and aren't tumbling as much. They are a very happy bunch.

I am astonished that they are now over four weeks old --- the time has passed so fast. I enjoy playing with them, but they are still at the stage where they want more nursing than play from me. However, there are a few pictures of #4 and I playing after nursing.

Pack Leader starts a three week stretch of holidays on Friday so we hope to do better with the blog over the final weeks we have the pups.

3 1/2 Weeks Old - Puppy Play

The boys have been outside for 15 minute adventures, once or twice a day since the weekend. Play time is gradually increasing to almost 30 minute stretches, but that is followed by lots of sleep. They are starting to make short little running bursts, and picking up more visually --- their noses aren't having to work as hard at plotting where to go next.

They are very interested in playing with me after nursing, but unfortunately Pack Leader has been slow on capturing these instances with the camera. As with all puppies, their attention span is a work in progress. One second they are after me to play but can be easily distracted by the wagging tail of a brother that might require a bite. Wagging tails are almost constant when awake.

#4 learned from #1 today that if you bite, expect to be bitten back. Over the coming weeks, many more of these lessons will be learned.

Beyond Mother's Milk

I was able to get out for a swim this morning. We've had a real heat wave lately, and it sure felt good.

After that my boys were indulged. Each of them spent time in the living room, individually, exploring, their sniffers going at maximum. Before making the long (according to Pack Leader) journey back to the whelping room, each of them snuggled and slept for a while with Pack Leader on the couch. Pretty pathetic --- Pack Leader gets the cuddles, and I get them when they are desperate for a meal.

They love to be petted, and enjoy human interaction. On that front, our neighbour Denise and her youngsters Devon and Rochelle visited today. Next time we'll try to get pictures.

#3 and #4 initiated play with me today, and they were a lot of fun, nibbling at my ears and paws.

The boys also had their first meal today. Pack Leader gave each of them a little bit on the end of his finger, and then all bets were off. They attacked that donut bowl just like they have been attacking me lately. My favourite part is that I get to clean up (and there is a fair amount of spillage).

Out of the box --- it's a big world

It is hard to believe that the boys will be three weeks old tomorrow. Today they had there first brief trip outside, and made the most of it. I was so proud of them all. They sniffed and waddled and investigated --- lots of confidence.

So far, there is not much to distinguish between the boys in terms of behaviours, disposition or abilities.

They all wag their tail for me (and sometimes Pack Leader).
They are getting steadier on their feet, and are getting fast.
Their vocabulary has increased --- new trills have been added to barks and howls.
All are participating in puppy wrestling, and they seem to organize a scheduled rotation so that everyone gets to square up with everyone else.
Their favourite place to curl up for a sleep is under my chin or tail.

We'll start using a flash in a couple of days so hopefully will get some better pictures.

# 1

Little "Potter" reminds me a lot of Benny from the first litter. He loves to cuddle, and studies the situation that faces him before launching into action. This picture doesn't show off the considerable brown on his cheeks and his three tone front right leg (and back left leg).

Little "Trim Jr." is a close looker for his father. Not unlike his father, he launches into action with authority and fast pace. He has perfected the under/over move and does a little run to celebrate his wrestling success. So far, he is the smallest of the boys. Very happy all the time.

Little "Angle" (for the white triangle on his collar) was the first to open his eyes and has been the most social (thus far). He comes to the side of the box for a pet before turning to the next wrestling match and he has fallen for Silken and wags his tail so hard when he smells or sees her that he sometimes falls over.

Little "Disney" provides both choreography and comic relief for his brothers. First puppy to bark ferociously and wag his tail (at the same time). Doesn't like getting his nails clipped, but does enjoy cuddling with Pack Leader and me when he is tired. But he has to be good and tired, otherwise there is too much else to do and investigate.

Pack Leader has been trying to get pictures of the pups and their newly opened eyes for the last couple of days. Unfortunately the natural light conditions are just not adequate to capture them yet. We will try again after the next nursing session.

The brown markings for #1 and particularly #3 are growing in --- quite striking features with the brown on black, particularly on their faces. Both #1 and #3 have their father's eyebrows, and #2 looks like a complete Trim clone. Still not sure about #4's brown/tan markings --- might be a grey butt rather than their father's tan butt.

Also not sure about eye color for #4 --- he seems to have slightly lighter blue eyes --- Trim has one blue and one brown eye. The eyes for the other three are the deep blue/brown that the last litter had, which suggests they will have brown eyes.

They are all moving much better, and they all can toilet on their own, because they can stand long enough to complete the process. We also had tail wagging this morning from #1 and #4. I'm also hearing more barks and the first signs of play growling.

Exploring the Box

My boys discovered their front legs overnight, and over about an hour each of them undertook detailed explorations, sniffing and licking. They are also getting quite vocal. I am noticing eye activity behind their little eye-lids, but they haven't opened their eyes yet.

Maggie (from the first litter) is visiting for a couple of days. She was shocked by her first glimpse. I have let her come into the whelping room, but only for a quick peak. Silken and Faolin are very good at respecting my rules, but can be a little bit of a pain --- they think all puppy sounds require my immediate attention --- they don't understand that a mother always knows.

Weights continue to climb:

#1 - 1.22 kilograms (2 pounds, 11 ounces)
#2 - 1.12 kilograms (2 pounds, 7 ounces)
#3 - 1.24 kilograms (2 pounds, 12 ounces)
#4 - 1.17 kilograms (2 pounds, 9 ounces)

We're limiting light in the whelping room until the pups eyes adjust to the bright world that awaits.

Not a lot new to report but I am starting to appreciate how entertaining the boys are going to be in the coming weeks.

They eat heartily, sleep deeply, and now they are starting to move around the box as quickly as their muscles and balance will allow them. Two minutes of attempts to get up on all fours, and then they nap so that they can make another valiant attempt when next they awake. They are doing all of this as a unit ---- their aren't any wallflowers in this bunch. A short video showing today's struggle to walk follows.

A new video and pictures follow. I continue to spend most of the evening and night with my boys, but am able to spend more time away from them during the day. They are working hard at strengthening their leg muscles, and I am even hearing the occasional little bark.

Eating, Sleeping and Growing

My boys are now one week old and they have doubled their birth weights:

#1 - 890 grams (1 pound, 15 ounces)
#2 - 840 grams (1 pound, 13 ounces)
#3 - 940 grams ( 2 pounds, 1 ounce)
#4 - 820 grams (1 pound, 13 ounces)

The pups muscle development continues, with the beginnings of shoulders and hocks.

Not a lot of action over the weekend. As a result, I was able to get out for my longest walk since the birth --- an amazing 45 minutes.

Over the next few days, the pups will begin to stand up, although there will be more collapsing than standing for several more days. If they are like the last litter, eyes will begin opening mid-week (around day 11).

I can confirm that three of the pups are tri-colors. Still not sure about #4, although he does have a pronounced tan butt just like his dear old Dad.

Sleepy Friday

It has been a sleepy day so far. I'm making the pups work a little bit harder to get to me, and I am now cutting nursing time. They are learning about eating on my schedule, not theirs. As a result, the boys are tired after eating, and sleep soundly and deeply between my visits. It is also helping me get some rest.

There were a couple of full scale tantrums overnight. No. 2 and No. 3 were quite upset that they had to do some crawling to get to me. So I gave them a kiss on the snout and removed myself from the box until they calmed down. A mother's training is so important. There will be more temper tantrums, but gradually they will understand that good behaviour gets better results.

To make it up to them this morning I let them feed to their hearts content, and then snuggled with them for more than an hour. They are also realizing that Pack Leader is not me. Their sniffers are getting very good at distinguishing between where they are, relative to the all day diner.

Day 5 - Getting Faster

Since my last post we've had an exciting 24 hours. First an earthquake (rare in these parts) and then a tornado (also rare) just north and west. The boys slept through it all.

They have had two rounds of ENS (Early Neurological Stimulation) so far, and Pack Leader will continue with this early evening routine until their eyes and ears open. I watch every move very carefully. So far, minimal reaction to everything but the "cold damp towel" --- they aren't big fans of that 3 second experience.

Since we haven't been able to get many good pictures of #4 yet, following is one of him sleeping on one of my hind legs last night.

To finish this post a short video of my return to the box this morning. I sure get their attention, and they are moving much faster to get to me. They also have started kneading. Sorry for the occasional blurring --- the auto focus on the pack leader's camera struggles with the contrast of black and white in low light conditions.

Growing Stronger (and Bigger)

When I come into the box now, I make sure to change the routine. I'm trying to encourage more crawling before they get to the 24/7 diner.

After I came in from this mornings walk I lay down with my back to the puppies. #2 was the only one with significant attitude, bawling loudly about having to crawl all the way around to my front. #1 was very efficient on finding and getting directly to a nipple, with #3 and #4 close behind.

The pups are now able to hold their front paws up to the nipple, but don't quite have the coordination yet to knead. That will come soon enough. And at that stage Pack Leader better keep those little razor nails trimmed (please and thank you).

I've noticed more strength developing in my boys hind quarters, and their necks are also getting bigger and stronger (from suckling).

My puppies continue to grow. We had a very good night and more of the same today.

I can leave the box a little more now, and they are always excited to see me back. My return gets them moving from one end of the box to the other.

Pack Leader was able to trim nails of two boys this afternoon --- he didn't use the same words he used with the first litter, so that is a good sign. Hopefully, the other two will get their nails done soon too --- the one downside of not making myself available 24/7 is that they are more aggressive nursers when I get back. This is an important part of their development --- getting them moving and training them to eat when they have the opportunity is an important part of a mother border collie's job.

I let Silken observe the puppies from an adequate distance today.

Editors note: Don't take everything Cait says literally. She might have been out of the box for 30 minutes so far today.

Day 2

After their exciting first day my boys have given Mom a little break. They gave me the gift of more sleeping time, and I was able to go out for a short back yard walk just before dinner. I'm getting fed three times a day now, and that is definitely a bonus.

The boys are able to move a little faster, and all four were pushing up on their hind legs to nurse today.

All of the pups put on weight over the first 24 hours:

#2 was up 30 grams to 420
#3 was up 40 grams to 470
#4 was up 20 grams to 430

One Day Old

My pups had a good night. I am still a little uncomfortable, but feeling better by the hour. My appetite has returned with a vengeance and I am getting my figure back. First Pictures (and another Faolin story)

David here again. My apologies for not posting pictures earlier today, but it has been a heavy couple of days.

As posted earlier, Faolin and Silken went to stay with friends in Kingston on Thursday and Faolin decided to do a runner last night. Fortunately prodigal Faolin was tracked down this afternoon almost 15 kilometres west, and about half way to the Amherst Island ferry, negotiating several busy roads and highways along the way. So working with my friend Gayla, I spent most of the day (between looking after pups and Cait) organizing flyers and making contacts to track Faolin down.

One of my university roommates is the hero of the day. He is a senior Ontario Provincial Police officer and spent his day off handing out and posting flyers. It was his work that developed the lead to track Faolin down. I am forever thankful to Brian, and his wife Liese, Gayla and a number of her friends for the extraordinary efforts to track my "challenging" border collie down.

Enough about that. Just wanted to explain the delay and celebrate Christmas early.

Now on to the important business. My other excuse is that it is next to impossible to get good new born puppy pictures. They are exceptionally wiggly, so these are the best of many attempts.

Cait and Her Boys

Puppy # 1 (aka "Harry Potter")

He is almost all black, with a little white flash on his forehead. Like all the pups, he has white paws and tail tip. His weight after first nursing was 420 grams (14 3/4 ounces).

Puppy # 2

The smallest pup, had a little bit of a slow start but has made up for it all day at Cait's diner. He weighed in at 390 grams (13 3/4 ounces). I only have one decent photo of him so far (with #3 on the left below) because I didn't want to interfere with either his nursing or sleeping time. He has a white irregular collar (like Benny from the first litter) and an olympic torch blaze (like his Mom and Jade from the first litter).

Puppy #3

The biggest puppy weighed in at 430 grams (15 ounces). He has a white triangle on the top of his neck (that could move as he grows), brindled cheeks, and perhaps Trim's famous eyebrows. It will take several days to see the extent of the tan and brown tri-coloring.

Puppy # 4

The loudest and most food driven pup on day 1. He has both a white head (with the exception of the ears and part black top) and a white irregular collar. So far, haven't been able to pick up any tan, although there could be some on the back legs. He looks a lot like my Silken. He weighed in at 410 grams (14 1/2 ounces).

David here. This will be my one post.

Cesarean section again. Our vets Michelle and Lex kept us on a tight leash given what happened with the first litter. It was a good thing they did. 5 minutes after stage II contractions started there was significant green discharge --- suggesting a rupture in one of the sacs. We flew down the road to our vets and Cait was on the operating table at 8:10 a.m. Turned out the ruptured sac was Puppy #2 and fortunately we were able to save him and he is doing just fine.

Cait and the pups are all doing well. The boys are nursing for the second time. A couple of real big ones again, and all with very different markings.

Everything is progressing as it should. About every thirty minutes I do some nesting and move around a little, and then sleep. David is getting me outside every 2 - 3 hours for a bathroom break --- I do my business, and then head immediately back to the door to get to my chosen nest.

The pack leader is going to try to get some sleep between my nesting activity. Next report will be first thing in the morning, or when the puppies arrrive, whichever comes first.

Moved in about 45 minutes ago and am doing a little redecorating --- a little bit of paper here, a little bit of old clothing there. I'm still sleeping most of the time. If it is like last time, I'm about 12 hours away from starting labor. Could be a long night ahead of us.

I'm not very hungry this morning and my temperature has dropped by 0.5 degrees. Haven't felt compelled to start a nest yet, but I have been checking out locations - I know I'm going to end up in the puppy room but you need to have a back-up just in case.

Only a short update (need to eat and get my sleep).

My temperature is holding steady but I think the puppies are beginning to drop a little. Was out for a good walk this evening.

Pack leader is now home for the duration. Tomorrow night we run Silken and Faolin up to Gayla's place. They are going to be visiting with Gayla until the puppies are a couple of days old.

Haven't started a nest yet but I can throw that together in a matter of minutes.

Still thinking that June 20th (Father Trim's Day) will be the day.

Meg was entered in her first agility competition today in Ottawa. I am so proud --- my little girl won for her height class, 22 inches tall, and earned her first "Q" towards her agility title. Bartender, liver treats all around! Special thanks to Peter and Gail Cunningham for helping to bring the best out of Meg.

Went to the island for a walk and a swim. Even though it hasn't been that hot lately, it was great to cool off. I spent a lot of time just standing in the water.

Silken, Faolin and Maggie did some sheep work. After Silken and David had carefully shed off a group that included the guard Llama, Anna, and sent them to the other end of the pasture it was Maggie's turn to do a little work. First order of business for her was to put everybody back together, with particular emphasis on the Llama. Maggie lives at a beef farm, and seems to prefer working big stock. A couple of pictures follow, one of Maggie taking a stand command, and one of a little bit fast "come-bye". Maggie sure gets Anna's attention --- gotta like that.

June 12 - Day 56

Sounds like I am describing a siege --- I am. Twice a day temperature taking started this morning. Enough said.

I am slowing down. Went for a walk yesterday evening through the backyard trail and David snapped this picture of me. Other than a brief respite in the stream, I stuck at the pack leader's heel for the entire walk. I'm carrying more weight, and my appetite is bottomless.

I have been spending a lot of time grooming. The big shed is underway, and I'm thinning hair on my belly to get ready for nursing puppies.

As promised I have organized some pictures of the first litter of puppies. They are now just short of 2 1/4 years old, and I am really proud of all of them.

I have already posted a picture of Jade (aka #1 and T-bone) playing fetch. Following is one of my favourite puppy pictures of her that I haven't posted before -- it is with her owner's grandson Carter. She is really close with Carter's little sister Taylor as well.

Two Weeks to Go

More changes. I'm starting to lose hair on my belly, putting on a little bit of weight, and am taking more rest breaks when we are out exercising. David has put away the frisbee, but did get me in for a swim a couple of times this past weekend --- just resting in the cool water was great. If I want to get the pack leader's heart rate up, a little jump from time to time is always entertaining.

Two more weeks (I think). My appetite has increased, and I am being fed more (but it is never enough). Don't want these puppies to be too big this time.

Pack leader was so pleased to feel some puppy movement this morning. Bet he wouldn't be quite as pleased if the movement was happening in his stomach.

I must confess that I am looking forward to all of this. Spent some time in the whelping room last night --- the pack leader sprang for some new washable carpet for the bottom of the whelping box and it is really comfortable to lie on.

I am going to try to organize some recent pictures of the first litter of puppies for the next posting, but in the interim, attached is a picture of Jade playing fetch.

It is official. I am with pup(s). Due date is June 20. Haven't noticed much difference yet, but I did put on a pound over the last week. This final stretch is when I will really lose my waist line.

We were up to the island for some hiking and swimming.

I think I am more relaxed about all of this this time.

New Homes

Back from the farm late last night after two weeks of puppy socialization and lambing.

David suggested I title this entry, "The Final Chapter" (yuck, gag me with a spoon). Due to continual whining it has been necessary to confine the pack leader to the big crate. I have never witnessed such severe separation anxiety in either dogs or humans. Hopefully he will get a grip before tomorrow morning when he is scheduled to return to that day job thing he does in Toronto.

It was a spectacular two weeks. The first two pups went last Friday, with the other two following on Saturday. I know that it was time for them to set out on new adventures with their chosen humans. They are all lucky little pups to have gone to very good new homes --- which made it easier for me to say goodbye.

We spent the last couple of weeks investigating all the farm critters, exploring the fields and lake shore and meeting lots of new people.

Island Jade

Island Jade has gone to live with Barry and Colleen Fenton who live near my weekday home outside Brighton. She will enjoy a spectacular country life with her border collie pack mate "Ace".

Maggie will be living with Reta Brown, the neighbouring farmer on Amherst Island. David says she looks and behaves a lot like I did when I was eight weeks old. We are going to work with her on sheep when she gets a little bit older. Maggie is the pup David decided to co-own.

Island Benny (aka #3, Belly Boy)

Benny has gone to live with Rachel and Eric Frid-Snyder in Kingston, Ontario where he will join a very active extended dog family with border collie experience. He was the first pup to go and I must admit that I did whimper a little bit when he was dropped off, but I know he has gone to a very loving home and will be provided with lots of challenging activities.

Island Meg has gone to live with Gail and Peter Cunningham in Ottawa. They have raised many border collies and are planning to explore sheep herding and agility with Meg, just as they have done with the previous border collies in their charge.

We hope to have a web site up and running sometime this fall (after a summer of farm work and activities) where I will report on the pups development.

Before signing off on this blog, I do want to thank you all for your interest and participation in this excellent adventure. It was great watching sister Tap raise her first puppies at the same time --- I finally had a chance to check out the last two weeks on her blog this morning and her puppies are very beautiful (and will be heading off to their new homes later this week).

So that is all for now. Have to go and check whether David requires water. The whining has stopped and hopefully he is having a little nap.

Vet Visit

It was off to Northumberland Vet Clinic for examinations, microchips and first shots this afternoon. Well the pups were there for that --- I was there to meet my public. As you know, the last time I was there for a visit I was somewhat indisposed --- didn't do much schmoozing on March 19th given the collision that was happening inside me. But I digress ... I certainly made up for it all today.

The pups did very well for first timers. Lots of compliments on how well I have raised them, with weights ranging between 8 (Jade #1) and almost 10 pounds (Belly Boy #3 and Millie Junior #4). Sticky (#2) tried to make a run for it with two pig's ears --- I was so embarrassed. The others, thankfully, were a little more restrained.

At any rate, we're back home and will head for the farm first thing in the morning. The pups will sleep well tonight. It has been a big day for them. We went for an almost 15 minute walk through the woods first thing this morning.

We had another first today --- absolutely no protestations about being in a crate and going for the car ride to the vets. They are ALMOST well enough behaved for the Tim Hortons drive thru.

Pups on the Prowl

My pups are now going for short little walks in the woods. They love playing hide and seek, and investigating all the plants and activities --- birds and squirrels are definite attention grabbers.

I also saw the first signs of herding/stalking behaviour over the last couple of days --- heading humans, other dogs and toys.

Each of them have tried to use their "eye" to get me to stand still enough to nurse, but I'm not falling for that. They are eating well enough. I am still spending time with the pups first thing in the morning and last thing at night --- I allow them to nurse a little bit, but I'm spending most of my time on bite inhibition. The weaning process has begun.

The pups have been going two at a time for car rides, playing with Devon (our three year old next door neighbour) and generally meeting lots of different sorts of folks.

It will be off to the vets for their first visit tomorrow. Then to the island for two weeks of new experiences, socialization and rest.

I'm preparing myself for my pups heading off to their new homes in a couple of weeks --- I've done my best with this bunch, and it will soon be time for their human companions to take over the training.

David, on the other hand, is getting just a little bit too attached. I'm watching him very carefully in case he heads for the car with a passport and puppy food.

5 1/2 Weeks Old

My puppies have settled into a good routine. They continue to grow, I am in the process of weaning them (although I must admit early morning and just before bed cuddle time is still happening). David is going to weigh them later today, but estimates that they are all above 6 pounds now.

I love all the pups, but am growing particularly fond of my little fella (#3). He nurses and then makes sure he cuddles under my chin and gives me little kisses. Millie Jr. (#4) and T-Bone (#1) eat and run --- both of them are getting pretty fast, and together with Sticky (#2) they spend a lot of time playing hide and seek in the woods.

We will all be heading for the farm for two weeks starting on Friday. I will try to get David to post some new pictures before we go. There will be a longer than usual break on the blog because we don't have computer access on the island.

I'm looking forward to getting back to some sheep herding, swimming and fetch. It will be nice to spend some good quality pack time with all our friends there.

We will make sure that we let everyone know about all our experiences when we return.

Exploring the Backyard - Day 29

Somebody, who shall remain nameless, forgot to put the pin in the x-pen gate yesterday morning before heading to work. When the puppy sitter arrived a few hours later, the puppies were out and about.

The good news --- they remained close by and there were only a couple of small "accidents". In fact, it appeared that they headed back to the paper in the pen when necessary.

The bad news. I was pursued for those hours by a marauding pack of sharp toothed puppies intent on power nursing. You would need to live that experience to fully appreciate my morning.

The somebody, who shall remain nameless, has apologized and promised that it will never happen again. I also received cod treats, my favourite, and an extra long tummy rub.

First Day In the Back Yard - Day 27

Sorry that I have been negligent on keeping the blog up to date. My typist complains that he has been too busy with work to assist me with this task. If anybody knows of a good voice synthesizer software package that translates barks to English please let me know.

The puppies are all growing and very active. Today was their first day in the backyard. They all were tired at the end of the play session, which allowed for taking pictures with minimal blurring.

They are all eating solid food now, and I have cut back nursing to once or twice a day. I have had to correct Millie Jr. (No. 4) on a couple of occasions about not using teeth while nursing. The others have learned from these corrections.

The pups are also beginning to understand the concept of paper training. There have been no accidents in the whelping box for several days now, and the bathroom/paper area will continue to be decreased in size over the next few weeks. I hope to have them house trained and well mannered before they go to their new homes.

Not much difference in behaviours or personalities yet, but this will likely change over the next few weeks. All of the puppies are people oriented and big on tail wagging.

On Thursday we will try to make another little movie of the activity outside.

Day 18

It was a spectacular spring day in these parts.

As predicted, Sticky (#2) made it out of the whelping box today. I had to run to get David to collect her before she got too far down the hallway. She knew enough to keep quiet and met David with her signature tail wagging "I can wrap you around my little paw" look. When we got back to the whelping box T-Bone (#1) was also making a move for "the wall" but Millie Jr. (#4) was hanging on her tail which made it impossible to make it over.

You will notice that I haven't mentioned Belly Boy (#3) yet. Today, he fully experienced what it will be like growing up with three sisters. Any time he makes a move to play with any of the girls, all three respond "in kind". He spent a lot of time at the bottom of the pile today. By late afternoon he was applying a "I'll stay in the corner" defensive strategy --- flipped Millie Jr. who dared take him on with his back against the wall --- Sticky wagged her tail and waddled off to David for a pet instead of helping out. That was the first indication that my boy might have a chance.

This afternoon the puppies spent a few minutes on the back deck --- it was a very warm day and they loved exploring.

On Tuesday (Day 20) we will try them on a little puppy mush for the first time. That will certainly be special. Since we've had the whelping box great escape, the x-pen has gone up and the pups will have a bigger area to explore but an impossible (I hope) wall to climb.

Two weeks (and a day)

Sorry that I haven't been on the blog for a couple of days. I've been busy with busier puppies.

The puppies sleep hard, eat hard and NOW play hard. I wish we weren't on dial up so that I could upload some of the videos. It can be very entertaining.

Since the puppy eyes are newly opened, we haven't been taking any flash pictures. That makes things a little bit more difficult in getting any decent pictures. Action shots just aren't possible at this stage due to the light conditions. If you look closely you can see the little emerging eyes.

On the news front:

when I return to the whelping box with the all day diner, I am being met by wagging tails. It is a welcome change from the "attitude" I was getting last weekend.

all the puppies are peeing on their own (yippe ... and yuck no more). I can't wait for the "other thing" to also be handled by them on their own.

they all can trill and offer barks befitting much larger dogs.

puppy pile on is a very competitive sport (2 minutes of action is followed by an hour of sleep). Everyone wins and loses several times over the course of the two minute competition.

they all continue to grow and we hope to do new weights on the weekend.

Puppy Eyes

The puppies eyes have started to open. No.1 (T-bone) and No. 3 (Belly Boy) are the first. I haven't taken any pictures this evening because it is getting dark. I will try to take some pictures tomorrow in the natural light.

However, I do have a couple of pictures I would like to share.

Following is a picture my good friend Gayla took of me and my pups on day four. Everyone has grown a lot since this picture was taken, but I think it is the best picture yet of me, and I wanted to share.

I don't know quite how to describe the following picture. Millie is one of my pack mates. She is an almost all white border collie (David calls her "unique"). At any rate she has apparently decided to adopt her own puppies.

Don't know how to break it to her but these ones definitely aren't border collies. I feel the irresistible urge to "walk up" --- must be my hormones.

Day 10

Over a few hours this morning, all of the puppies learned to stand up on all four legs. It started with No. 2 (who by noon was even able to take a few steps before crashing). Pretty amazing (and scary) to see this happening. When I enter the whelping box now they're getting to me much faster!

They are all becoming little individuals. No. 4 gave me a kiss on the nose this morning (unfortunately I didn't have the camera handy to record that special moment). No. 3, as my only boy, cuddles with me a lot and likes to stick his nose in my ear. I don't mind that a bit --- he's figured out how to wrap his Mom around his little paw. No. 1 lets out a little trill when I come back to the whelping box for feeding and sleeping --- she's my happy girl. No. 2 is the athlete - she has my legs.

Their eyes and ears are still a few days away from opening.

In other news, I was out for a long walk with David, Silken and Faolin at daybreak. We've had a lot of coyote activity around here lately so there were lots of interesting smells in the woods. I love the walks --- but I love being a Mom as well and rush back to my pups as soon as we return.

One Week Old

My pups have made it to the one week mark. I am able to spend more time out of the whelping box, and the pups are learning to cope with my more frequent absences. When I return, they love to eat and then curl up on my legs for some cuddle time. I must admit that those moments are my favourite.

Everyone was weighed today:

#1 - 788 grams (1.7 pounds) up 95% since birth.

#2 - 778 grams (1.7 pounds) up 62% since birth.

#3 - 823 grams (1.8 pounds) up 91% since birth.

#4 - 890 grams (almost 2 pounds) up 82% since birth.

It won't be too many more days until my pups eyes and ears open. Soon they will be walking (and climbing and barking) and then all bets will be off.

As I embark on this new stage, I am resolved to approach my important mothering tasks with the quiet calm (and authority) that I try to bring to all tasks in life. However, you might hear some complaints from me over the coming weeks and for that I will ask both your indulgence and understanding. I'm certain my pups can't be any more difficult than pack mate Faolin, who has taught me more about patience (and indulgence) than any other living creature.

Number 2 (Sticky) went "over the top (of Mom)" today. She was at Mom's back and climbed over (rather than going under) to get to the diner. Early predictions? Sticky will be the first to climb out of the whelping box.

Day 4 - Getting Caught Up on My Sleep

I can confirm that all pups are tri-colors. Sticky (No. 2) has a few brown hairs coming out on her cheeks. Millie Jr. (No. 4) has the brindled cheeks (just like me) and tan eyebrows.

Last night I had 3 1/2 hours of uninterrupted sleep. It was a devine experience.

My pups are getting into a good routine. I was able to go for a walk through the woods with Silken, Faolin and David this morning and it was wonderful. Unfortunately didn't find any rotting deer hides (although I looked high and low) like Momma Pat and sister Tap.

I have a lot of people and dogs to thank.

First, my special neighbour Denise spent many hours with me during my labour. She raises Siberian Huskies (I try not to hold that against her) and humans (2 of the cutest dog focused children you will ever meet). She conferred with David and rubbed my tummy when I needed it most, made the trip to our vets, and made sure my puppies were safe on the ride home.

My vets Dr. Michelle and Dr. Lex at Northumberland Veterinary are pretty amazing. When my labour stalled they took charge and made sure I was safe and that my puppies would be okay. I was asleep for some of this experience but I am told that the action was skillful, fast, obsessively organized (border collies like that attention to detail) and dramatic --- I woke up to meet my puppies and feed them for the first time.

Thanks to Doug and Gayla (and Mae) for keeping things going at the farm. We had some early lambs this year and the all nighters haven't just been happening here. I can hardly wait to get to the island to show you the new family.

Thanks to Barry for coming over to visit me last night. Barry knows border collies and he is going to provide a home for one of my pups. Last night he came over to pay attention to me, brought liver treats (my favourite) and told me how much he liked my pups. He also built my whelping box, which has been working so well.

There are many more that I need to thank, and I will get to that personally over the coming weeks. I need to finish off by giving a special thanks to Faolin and Silken, my pack mates. They have stayed well away from the puppies (even though I know they are very interested) and have been giving me lots of kisses and support when we have been going out for bathroom breaks. I know that both of them will be good Aunties once the time is right to get the pups involved in the pack dynamics.

Now that I have the thanks over I can report that last night was a good night. The pups are getting into a good eating and sleeping routine, and my incision was not as uncomfortable as it was during the first night. Things were probably helped by the first trimming of puppy nails --- it is an indescribable feeling to have a pup spinning on a nipple while simultaneous digging razor sharp puppy nails into your mammaries.

The pictures are of the pups from early this morning. They are now almost two days old.

I have also given the puppies "pet" names. #1 is also known as "T-bone" (for obvious reasons). #2 is also called "Sticky" (again for obvious reasons). #3 is affectionately called "Belly(boy)" because he tends to nurse while lieing on his back --- I see more of his belly than anything else. #4 is being called "Millie 2" because she spends every moment she can on a nipple --- like my pack mate Millie she is obviously food driven.

16 Hours Old

These aren't the best pictures, but we're pretty tired in these parts. We'll try to do better in the coming days.

After a long labour, Cait required a C section. The decision was made after trying a number of techniques at the vets which might have avoided the surgery scenario.

Everything had been going quite well, with lots of nesting overnight and Cait's water breaking at about 12:30 yesterday. Unfortunately, labour stalled over the next two hours and at that point I was concerned for Cait's welfare, and that of the puppies. Cait wasn't in distress and I could still pick up great puppy heart beats. So we headed off to the vets.

Upon surgery, it was discovered that two puppies were attempting to be first out. Unfortunately neither was willing to be number 2, and they appeared to have met at the connection between the uterine horns and the birth canal. This whelping was not going to happen naturally.

Fortunately, all the puppies including the little girl who had been t-boned by her sister entering the canal, were fighters and came into this world yelping in synchrony. It was quite the experience to witness all of them, together, taking their first breaths.

We've had a good night. Cait doesn't appear to be too sore. She is a very attentive Mom, all the pups have put on weight already, and she is doing everything (and more) that she needs to do.

When Cait gets rested up, she will be re-taking the writing duties on this blog. She will likely have more to say.

She was wagging her tail this morning, very proud and relaxed and settling into her new role as Mom.

Cait is too tired to report directly tonight. But tomorrow, I'm sure she will have something to say about the experience.

Just the highlights tonight. Turns out there are four puppies --- three females and one male. Coloring is predominately black with some tan and variations on the white collars and blaze. They were born around 6:00 p.m. this evening.

Everyone is fine, although there is a story to be told. For tonight, we are happy to report that everyone is resting and eating and then resting again.

Saw Michelle my vet yesterday and it has been confirmed (as best as these things can be confirmed) that I'm carrying five puppies. David is still thinking that next Wednesday will be the due date, but Michelle is leaning towards Friday, March 21st. I'm hoping David's guess is right. It is time.

Now that I am on the verge of becoming a mom, I was thinking back to when I was a little puppy and my very special Mom, Pat. I have fond memories of my time as a puppy with Fiona, Mom, my littermates and even Spur. Thought I would share a couple of my special photos with Mom.

Sorry that I haven't been in touch for a while. It is not my fault - David has been very busy at work, getting the nursery ready, and complaining about all the snow.

It should be about 10 days to go now. My pups are a very busy bunch and most active in the evening hours. I was weighed yesterday, and came in at a whopping 42.5 pounds. Keep in mind that my normal weight is 34-36 pounds, and I had dropped to 32 pounds on day 29 (the day of the ultrasound).

David has been able to pick up little heartbeats with a stethoscope and I am finally getting comfortable with all the movement and kicking. About 10 days ago I tried various lie down strategies, but the pups don't seem interested in where I chose to rest --- they just keep moving. So I now just try to wait it out although sometimes I like to have my tummy rubbed when the pups are active.

I still want to play and exercise as much as ever, but David stopped the frisbee playing a long time ago. So I'm left to run at top speed through the deep snow --- I figure if the puppies can jostle me, I should be able to jostle the puppies.

Sort of ironic that his name is "Trim". That used to be the way I described my waist line ... but I digress. There is a picture of Trim herding sheep this summer, and a picture of the two of us (Trim on the right).

We first met in Trim's back yard on a cold January morning --- January 16th to be precise.

The first thing I noticed about Trim was his beautiful eyes --- one brown and one blue. When you are a border collie, "eye" counts. I must admit that I was more than a little bit charmed by that first look.

I also noticed that he was very friendly, easy going and obviously in love with life. Trim is good looking --- not just the eyes, the entire package.

Humans generally don't understand this, but you can learn a lot about a dog through the scent of his (or her) pee. So I had a pee, and Trim had a pee --- then we sniffed, and then we peed again. We did that a few times, but whose counting. When you are choosing a mate you need to spend a lot of time smelling and sniffing.

We also communicated about sheep herding, fetch and our pack mates. A little bit of gossip is always an ice breaker. I learned that Trim:

was imported in whelp from England;

that his father is a pretty famous sheepdog, Beechwood Bob;

is five years old (a year older than I am);

really liked me a lot.

In fact while all the other boys I've met went a little bit weak in the knees, Trim even rolled for me.

And if you are looking for any more details on what happened after that, you won't hear them from me. I'm not that sort of girl.

In other news my morning sickness has passed and I spent a delightful couple of days with my best friends Doug and Gayla at the farm. This morning I have David busy working on the nursery, and since he is making a lot of progress on that important job, I'll take him on a walk this afternoon because it is a beautiful sunny day.

Pregnancy Confirmed

Thank God my pregnancy was confirmed last week. I understand that David was more than a little uncertain and nervous, but the morning inspections were getting quite tiring. At times like this I do wish I could talk human - I did everything but draw David a map.

So we headed off to the vets for an ultrasound which indicated five or six little acorn sized growing puppies. This is just about the midway point of my pregnancy, so numbers can't be considered as being very accurate.

I haven't noticed much of a difference in my energy levels. A romp through the deep snow at high speed is still a desirable activity. I am probably a bit more clingy, a little bitchy on occasion around my packmates, and my stomach has been a little bit off in the mornings. But all in all, I think I am doing quite well.

Due date is March 19 (the same birthday as my Uncle Donald's 8th - in dog years)

Next week I will introduce you to Trim (the guy who is responsible for my delicate condition).
